Hello 2023! Here are our Reading Resolutions

Amanda

I'd like to spend the first part of the year catching up on some TBRs that have been raved about by my fellow booksellers: Demon Copperhead, Babel, and The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida. Our new subscription service will have a huge impact on my reading life since we’ll be reading the 3-4 most interesting books coming out each month well before they release. This practice will help us best make our selection for the Dog-Pack subscription for adult fiction. It's an exciting challenge.

Amy

I enjoy being able to talk about books with other people, so I seem to end up reading a lot of books. In 2023, I want to give myself permission to go back and re-read books from the past that I have enjoyed. Quality over quantity. :)

Bailey

In 2023 I think I'm going to shoot for 120 books! But also to try and read some more non-fiction and buy some new book shelves to save some of my books from the stacks on the floor.

Britt

I want to read more about nature and try some more fantasy. I tend to be a realistic fiction, nonfiction, mystery, and YA reader. I want to cover more bases. I really like it all.

Ellyn

Read good books.

Bailey making good on her reading resolutions already—here is one of her beautiful new bookshelves!

Emily

Alongside delving more into books by authors from different backgrounds, I want to make progress on some of the books I already own but haven't read....especially because that number has increased dramatically since working at a bookstore... :P

Jack

I just want to read more, period. I've been seriously lacking recently. I need to reprioritize my time!

Jess

I would like to continue my resolution of slowing down. There are so many things I feel like I need to get read just because of working in the store and being able to give recommendations but overall I want my reading life to be fulfilling and enjoyable.

One of the books Emily is resolving to read, The Eighth Life—a store favorite.

Katie

I have always been a “mood reader,” so I mostly just grab whatever book strikes my fancy at the time. This usually means buying a new book every time I work at the store. This year, I want to try and tackle my TBR (to be read) piles scattered throughout my house, so I’ll make a list of 4-5 books off of my TBR every month to read alongside my “mood reads”.

Mariah

One of my reading resolutions is to complete the Book Riot 2023 Read Harder Challenge which I have done for the last three years. It’s one of my favorite ways to expand my reading life, and I’ve always found it fulfilling. I’m also challenging myself to read a total of 20 books in translation (5 more than last year!). Like many of my fellow booksellers, I am also trying to focus on enjoyment in my reading life—quality over quantity. I have felt like I can’t reread my favorites or partake in series because I need to be reading new things for the store, so I am also resolving to dive into at least 3 sci-fi or fantasy series.

Join Mariah in attempting the Book Riot 2023 Read Harder Challenge!

Nayeli

My resolution is to read 50 books in a year and expand the genres and books I read.

Roxy

Listen to more audiobooks to take a break from reading textbooks.

Support a different story than that other audiobook purveyor. Join Roxy in listening to more audiobooks by buying from Libro.fm which also supports Dog-Eared Books!

Sarah

I don't have many changes I would make to my reading life...perhaps find more time to curl up with a book, but isn't that all of us? There are never enough hours in a day when there are so many good books to explore!

Vince

I plan on keeping 2023’s resolution simple: read what you enjoy! I’m a sucker for novels with compressed timelines—set during a day or a weekend—and campus novels, which are set in or around a university campus. Bonus points if the story includes queer content. Happy reading, everyone!
